Synopsis
"The Cotton Club" (1984) is Francis Ford Coppola's crime drama you can watch online on iFILM. Harlem, 1920s and 30s. The legendary club on 142nd Street put the era's greatest jazz performers on the same stage that the most powerful gangsters in New York used as their private parlor. Richard Gere plays Dixie Dwyer, a white cornet player who knows how to walk the line between music and the mob.
Dixie saves crime boss Owney Madden from an ambush, and the favor pulls him deep into a world he can't easily leave. He falls for Vera, a gangster's girl played by Diane Lane. Meanwhile, tap dancer Sandman Williams — Gregory Hines — fights for the spotlight in a place that welcomes Black performers on stage but nowhere else. Bob Hoskins, James Reimar and a young Nicolas Cage fill out the edges of a story wound tight with jealousy, ambition and violence.
Coppola built the film as much around rhythm and spectacle as around plot — the tap sequences and jazz numbers are part of the argument, not decoration. Where deals were made, lives were traded, and the legends of jazz lit up the night. Stream "The Cotton Club" (1984) online on iFILM.
