About

Synopsis

Tucker: The Man and His Dream (1988) is a biographical drama directed by Francis Ford Coppola — watch it online on iFILM. Jeff Bridges plays Preston Tucker, a Michigan engineer who spent the years right after the Second World War trying to build a car Detroit had never seen: rear-mounted engine, fuel injection, a padded dashboard, seatbelts. Features that would become standard only decades later.

The Big Three automakers and their allies in Washington were not enthusiastic. Tucker found himself facing federal fraud charges while his factory was systematically dismantled. Joan Allen plays his steadfast wife, Martin Landau brings his business partner Abe Karatz to life, and a young Christian Slater rounds out the family. The courtroom scenes carry an edge that the rest of the film deliberately keeps light to hide.

Coppola frames the story as a kind of American fable — the dreamer who got too close to winning. Stream Tucker: The Man and His Dream (1988) online on iFILM.
