Synopsis

Summer Stock (1950) is an MGM Technicolor musical you can watch online on iFILM, starring Judy Garland and Gene Kelly under director Charles Walters. It was the last film Garland completed under her MGM contract.

New England farmer Jane Falbury is barely holding her land together — three bad harvests, two workers gone, debts piling up — when her sister Abigail shows up with a full theater troupe. Director Joe and his actor friends need a barn to rehearse their show. Jane agrees on one condition: everyone pulls farm duty until the curtain goes up. Joe takes the deal. The complication is that Joe is Abigail's fiancé, and Jane is running out of reasons not to notice him.

The film is remembered above all for its closing "Get Happy" number, shot by Garland in a separate session weeks after principal photography wrapped. That seven-minute sequence alone makes the picture worth finding. The easy chemistry between Garland and Kelly gives the whole thing a warmth that the slicker MGM musicals of the period rarely matched. Stream Summer Stock online on iFILM.
