Synopsis
Babette's Feast (Babettes gæstebud, 1987) is Gabriel Axel's Danish drama, adapted from Karen Blixen's story, and you can watch it online on iFILM. It is a quiet parable about faith, art and one extraordinary meal on a bleak Jutland coast.
Two aging sisters, daughters of a late pastor, keep his austere Protestant congregation alive in a village where pleasure counts as sin. Their housekeeper is Babette, a refugee who fled revolutionary Paris fourteen years earlier with almost nothing. When a lottery ticket suddenly hands her ten thousand francs, she asks to cook a real French dinner to honor the dead pastor. The sisters panic: can such richness be eaten without losing one's soul? Stéphane Audran plays Babette with a stillness that carries the whole film.
Axel films the cooking like a sacrament, turtle soup, quail in pastry, wine that softens stern faces and thaws old grudges across the table. It was the first Danish film ever to take home the foreign-language Oscar. Perfect for a slow evening when you want grace rather than action. Stream Babette's Feast (1987) online on iFILM.
