Synopsis
The Ballad of Narayama (楢山節考, 1983), directed by Shohei Imamura, is available to watch online on iFILM. A remote mountain village in nineteenth-century Japan lives by one brutal rule: when a villager turns 69, a son or daughter must carry them to the summit of Mount Narayama and leave them there to die.
Orin is 69, and she is the one pressing her reluctant son Tatsuhei to honor the ritual. She arranges marriages, settles debts, ties up every loose thread of family life — then calmly climbs onto his back for the last journey up the mountain. Tatsuhei's grief is the center of the film, not Orin's fate; he is the one who cannot bear what he is required to do.
Imamura adapted the story from Shichiro Fukazawa's novel and brought home the Palme d'Or at Cannes in 1983. The film passes no verdict on the villagers — it simply watches. That refusal to moralize is what makes it hard to shake long after it ends. Watch The Ballad of Narayama (1983) online on iFILM.
