Synopsis

Maïwenn directs and stars as Jeanne, a woman with no bloodline who trades on charm and sharp instinct. Johnny Depp plays the aging king almost entirely in French, a monarch worn down by decades of rule who comes back to life around a commoner who ignores every rule of court. Versailles loathes her. The king's daughters, the ministers and the courtiers scheme against the former courtesan who suddenly sets fashion and tilts French politics.
The film opened the 2023 Cannes Film Festival and marked Depp's return to a major screen role. Maïwenn strips the palace of its gloss: powder, corsets and gossip work here as weapons sharper than any blade.
