Synopsis

Exit Through the Gift Shop (2010) is Banksy's documentary, and you can watch online on iFILM. It calls itself the world's first street-art disaster movie, and the label fits. Thierry Guetta, a French shopkeeper in Los Angeles, filmed everything around him for years before stumbling into the underground of graffiti writers.

Camera always running, Guetta tags along on rooftop missions with Shepard Fairey, Invader and dozens of other artists. His real obsession is Banksy himself, the masked Brit nobody can pin down. When the two finally meet, the artist flips the lens around: Guetta has thousands of hours of footage but no idea how to cut a film. Banksy tells him to go make art instead, and that is where the story turns truly absurd.

Rebranding himself as Mr. Brainwash, the former shopkeeper throws a massive show and rakes in millions almost overnight, despite barely knowing what he is doing. Rhys Ifans narrates. The film earned an Oscar nomination for Best Documentary and still fuels the same debate: real account or Banksy's own elaborate prank. A sharp, funny takedown of the art market and the cult of hype.
