Live Free or Die Hard

This time the threat wears a suit and types fast. Thomas Gabriel, played by Timothy Olyphant, is a disgruntled ex-government programmer who launches a coordinated cyber assault on America's power grids, transportation networks and financial systems all at once. McClane's answer is to drag young hacker Matt Farrell — Justin Long — into the chaos. Farrell wrote part of the attack code without knowing it. Now he has to help undo it, or take the blame.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead plays McClane's daughter Lucy, who ends up caught in the crossfire and raises the personal stakes considerably. Maggie Q delivers one of the franchise's best fight sequences as assassin Mai Linh. The film marked a genre shift — from a building siege to a full national emergency — while keeping McClane exactly as stubborn and bloodied as ever.
