London enforcer Jack Carter heads back to his native Newcastle to bury his brother. The police blame a drunken crash, but Carter doesn't buy it and starts asking questions of his own. Every conversation with the dead man's friends and debtors pulls him closer to the truth, and deeper into trouble with the men who run the town. They give him a simple choice: clear off to the capital or end up in the ground beside his brother. Caine plays a cold, methodical killer without a shred of mercy, and that chill is the whole engine of the film.
