Synopsis
Delusions of Grandeur (La Folie des grandeurs, 1971) is a historical comedy by Gérard Oury that you can watch online on iFILM. Louis de Funès stars as Don Sallust, a tax-collecting minister to the King of Spain who fleeces everyone in sight and firmly believes the poor should stay poor while the rich grow richer.
When the queen strips him of his post and banishes him in disgrace, the humiliated minister hatches an elaborate revenge. His weapon is his own servant, Ruy Blas, played by Yves Montand — a quick-witted, mocking schemer tired of his master's stinginess. The servant soon learns to turn Sallust's greed and vanity against him, pulling the minister into a risky game centered on the beautiful queen.
Loosely reworking Victor Hugo's play Ruy Blas, the film spins the source into a brisk farce of chases, disguises and de Funès' trademark grimaces. The pairing of two opposite icons of French cinema — the twitchy miser and the charming rogue — drives the whole thing. Stream Delusions of Grandeur (1971) online on iFILM.
