Chernobyl: Abyss

Chernobyl: Abyss (2021) is a Russian historical disaster drama you can watch online on iFILM. Danila Kozlovsky both directs and stars as Alexei, a Pripyat firefighter whose ordinary life falls apart on the night of 26 April 1986.

Alexei has finally made up his mind: he tells hairdresser Olga how he feels, ready to take in her young son and start over by the sea. Then the sky over reactor four turns the wrong color. He drives toward a fire no hose can touch, and before long he is wading beneath the molten core to crank open the valves and drain the water pooling under it. If that second blast goes off, much of Europe becomes uninhabitable. Oksana Akinshina plays Olga, with Filipp Avdeev alongside. This is not a documentary record but invented characters dropped into a real catastrophe.
