Garrone keeps the camera on a sixteen-year-old for whom every next step might be the last, and Seydou Sarr's performance holds the whole thing together.

The film took the Silver Lion for directing at Venice and made the Oscar shortlist for Best International Feature. What sets it apart is the angle: the migration story told not as a news bulletin but as one boy's terrifying, almost fable-like adventure. Hard to watch, but never hopeless.
