Pinocchio

Watch Pinocchio (2019) online — a dark Italian fairy-tale fantasy directed by Matteo Garrone, shot on location across rural Tuscany and Lazio with Federico Ielapi as the wooden puppet and Roberto Benigni as old Geppetto. Benigni played the title role himself in his own 1996 version; here he hands it to a child and steps aside.

Geppetto carves a boy from a piece of enchanted wood, and the boy runs. Pinocchio has no patience for school, no instinct for danger, and no shortage of bad decisions: he falls in with a scheming Fox and Cat, winds up sold to a circus, crosses a talking Cricket who keeps trying to save him, and eventually lands inside a whale.
