Synopsis

Phoenix (2014) is Christian Petzold's German drama, available to watch online on iFILM. In a Berlin reduced to rubble, cabaret singer Nelly returns from the camps with a ruined face and undergoes reconstructive surgery that leaves her almost unrecognizable.

Barely healed, she goes looking for her husband Johnny and tracks him down. He doesn't see his wife in this new face, believing she died, yet the resemblance gives him an idea. He pitches a scheme: let the stranger impersonate his "late" wife so the two of them can claim her inheritance. Nelly plays along, partly for the money, mostly to learn whether he was the one who once handed her over. She ends up becoming her own double. Nina Hoss gives what many call the performance of her career, with Ronald Zehrfeld as the husband.

Petzold turns it into a noir about guilt and identity in occupied Germany, and the closing scene, built around a Kurt Weill song, hits without a single raised voice. Slow, exact filmmaking for viewers who prefer cold tension to loud payoffs. Stream Phoenix (2014) online on iFILM.
