About

Synopsis

The Lives of Others (Das Leben der Anderen, 2006) is a German drama you can watch online on iFILM. East Berlin, 1984. Stasi captain Gerd Wiesler is ordered to bug the apartment of a playwright and his actress lover.

Wiesler, played by Ulrich Mühe, is the perfect instrument of the state: cold, precise, loyal to the rules. He sits in an attic with headphones and logs every word inside the flat of Georg Dreyman (Sebastian Koch) and Christa-Maria Sieland (Martina Gedeck). The longer he listens to their music, their arguments, their tenderness, the more his own certainties start to crack. The man under surveillance slowly reshapes the man watching him.

Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck wrote and directed it as his feature debut, and it went on to win the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. This is less a spy thriller than a quiet study of one man who spent his life eavesdropping and finally heard himself. Stream The Lives of Others (2006) online on iFILM.
