Synopsis
Great Expectations (2011) is a BBC miniseries adapting Charles Dickens, and you can watch online on iFILM. Three episodes, directed by Brian Kirk, follow an orphan boy whom an unnamed benefactor decides to mould into a gentleman.
Pip grows up poor on the marshes, then suddenly inherits money and a future in London. The mystery behind the gift loops back to two people: a convict he once fed in secret, and the half-mad Miss Havisham, a jilted bride frozen in time inside her rotting wedding dress. Her ward, the icy Estella, has been raised since childhood to break men's hearts. Douglas Booth plays Pip, Gillian Anderson is Miss Havisham, Ray Winstone plays the fearsome Magwitch, and David Suchet appears as the lawyer Jaggers.
This is a tight, shadowy take on the novel — less romance, more about money, shame and self-deception. A treat for fans of English classics and unhurried period drama. Stream all episodes of Great Expectations (2011) online on iFILM.
