Synopsis
Les Misérables (2018) is a BBC period drama you can watch online on iFILM. This is not the musical — it's a sober adaptation of Victor Hugo's novel, songless, faithful to the page and considerably darker in mood. Dominic West plays Jean Valjean, freed after nineteen years on the chain gang for stealing a loaf of bread.
Valjean takes a new name and tries to build an honest life, raising Cosette, the daughter of the dying factory worker Fantine. But Inspector Javert (David Oyelowo) won't let go; recapturing the fugitive has hardened into a years-long obsession. Their duel stretches across France, from quiet provincial towns to the Paris barricades of 1832. The deep ensemble includes Olivia Colman, Lily Collins, Josh O'Connor and David Bradley, with Tom Shankland directing.
Six episodes give the story room a single film never can: time for the grime of poverty, for Valjean's slow moral rebirth, and for Javert's exacting, almost painful sense of order. If you only know the stage version, this one hands Hugo back to you whole. Stream Les Misérables (2018) online on iFILM.
