About

Synopsis

4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days (2007) is Cristian Mungiu's Romanian drama, available to watch online on iFILM. The setting is Bucharest in the final stretch of the Ceausescu years, when ending a pregnancy was a crime punishable by prison. The whole film unfolds across one suffocating day.

Two university roommates share a dorm room. Gabita is the one who is pregnant, but it is Otilia (Anamaria Marinca) who carries the burden — booking a cheap hotel room, scraping together cash, and going to meet a stranger called Mr. Bebe to arrange an illegal abortion. The camera rarely leaves her face. Scenes play out in long, unbroken takes with no score and no cues telling you how to feel, and the stakes climb with every passing hour.

The film took the Palme d'Or at Cannes and became a defining work of the Romanian New Wave. It is hard to sit through, and that is precisely the point: Mungiu films the abstraction of politics as something one specific person pays for with her body and her nerve. If you gravitate toward stark, unsparing cinema, this is one of its high-water marks. Stream 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days (2007) online on iFILM.
