Synopsis
Sullivan's Travels (1941) is Preston Sturges' classic, free to watch online on iFILM. Hollywood director John L. Sullivan is sick of cranking out lightweight hits. He wants to make a serious film about human suffering — and decides he first has to live some of it himself.
Disguised as a tramp with a dime in his pocket, Sullivan (Joel McCrea) sets out to learn what poverty actually feels like. A broke would-be starlet (Veronica Lake), done with Hollywood and heading home, tags along for the ride. The studio panics and sends a luxury bus, a cook and a doctor trailing after their runaway star — but real hardship eventually finds Sullivan on its own terms, far worse than he bargained for.
Sturges pulls off something rare: a screwball comedy that suddenly stops laughing and asks why laughter matters at all. That late twist, with a chain gang roaring at a cartoon, has been quoted for decades — it's where the Coen brothers got the title O Brother, Where Art Thou?
