Happening

Happening (L'Événement, 2021) is a French drama from director Audrey Diwan, available to watch online on iFILM. It adapts the autobiographical novel by Annie Ernaux, who would later win the Nobel Prize in Literature.

Set in a provincial town in the early 1960s, the film follows Anne (Anamaria Vartolomei), a literature student weeks away from her final exams when she learns she is pregnant. The law of the day makes ending a pregnancy a crime that could send her, and anyone who helps, to prison. Friends go quiet. Doctors refuse. Anne is left to navigate it alone while the calendar keeps moving, and the camera stays locked on her face through every dead end and whispered favor.
