Synopsis
Never Rarely Sometimes Always (2020) is Eliza Hittman's quiet drama, available to watch online on iFILM. Seventeen-year-old Autumn discovers she's pregnant in small-town Pennsylvania, where she can't end it without a parent's say-so, so she sets off for New York with almost no money and no plan.
Her only company is her cousin Skylar. The two ring up groceries at the same checkout back home, and they make this trip the same way: side by side, saying little. The city offers no soft landing. Nights stretched out in bus terminals, endless subway transfers, a heavy suitcase, and a dwindling handful of cash. Hittman shoots in close-ups and long silences, letting the camera sit on Sidney Flanigan's face until it tells you everything.
The title comes from a clinic intake questionnaire, and the single take built around those four words lands harder than any speech could. The film took the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance and a Silver Bear in Berlin, but its real worth is how gently and precisely it speaks about something usually left unsaid.
