His mother leaves for a lover, comes back, then leaves again. His father swings between wounded pride and a stubborn wish to hold the home together. This was De Sica's first film with screenwriter Cesare Zavattini, the partnership that would soon produce Bicycle Thieves and help define Italian neorealism.
