Synopsis
The Children Are Watching Us (I bambini ci guardano, 1943) is Vittorio De Sica's family drama, available to watch online on iFILM. A marriage falls apart, and the whole thing unfolds through the eyes of four-year-old Pricò, who grasps far more than the grown-ups assume.
His mother leaves for a lover, comes back, then leaves again. His father swings between wounded pride and a stubborn wish to hold the home together. The boy just watches — the fights, the apologies, the lies — never consulted, yet the one who pays for every adult choice. Luciano De Ambrosis plays Pricò without a trace of cuteness: not a sweet little angel but a silent witness you cannot look away from.
This was De Sica's first film with screenwriter Cesare Zavattini, the partnership that would soon produce Bicycle Thieves and help define Italian neorealism. Made in 1943, mid-war, it already traded studio polish for real faces and real streets. Slow, quiet and merciless toward its parents. Stream The Children Are Watching Us (1943) online on iFILM.
