It's the summer of 1935. Young Briony Tallis, played by Saoirse Ronan, witnesses a charged moment between her older sister and the housekeeper's son. What she misreads — and then deliberately distorts — sends Robbie to prison and then to the trenches of France. Cecilia cuts off her family and waits. Decades later, an elderly Briony, played by Vanessa Redgrave, confronts what her childhood accusation cost everyone, including herself. Benedict Cumberbatch appears as the smooth and unsettling Paul Marshall.

Cinematographer Seamus McGarvey shot the celebrated five-minute Dunkirk beach sequence in a single unbroken take. Dario Marianelli won the Academy Award for Best Original Score, and the film took the Golden Globe for Best Drama Motion Picture.
