Synopsis
Marriage Italian Style (Matrimonio all'italiana, 1964) is Vittorio De Sica's comedy-drama, free to watch online on iFILM. It pairs Sophia Loren and Marcello Mastroianni, the screen couple of post-war Italian cinema.
The story opens in wartime Naples. Domenico, a prosperous businessman, meets young Filumena in a brothel and keeps her as his mistress. More than twenty years pass. She runs his household, raises his children, and waits — while he keeps refusing to marry her and prepares to wed a much younger woman instead. So the woman he kept in the shadows for half a lifetime plays one final, desperate move. The film adapts Eduardo De Filippo's stage play Filumena Marturano.
Loren does more than look luminous here; she plays fury, calculation and exhaustion at once, and earned an Oscar nomination for it. De Sica keeps tipping the tone from farce toward something close to tragedy, so the laughs and the ache arrive together. A good entry point to Italy's golden-age cinema.
