Synopsis

Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow (Ieri, oggi, domani, 1963) is Vittorio De Sica's comic triptych, free to watch online on iFILM. Across three short tales, Sophia Loren and Marcello Mastroianni reinvent themselves as a different couple each time, from a Naples street hustler to a high-priced Roman escort.

In the first story, the wife of an unemployed man peddles black-market cigarettes and keeps getting pregnant, since the law won't jail an expectant mother, stringing the bailiffs along for years. The second drops us into a chilly Milan affair, a rich woman gunning her sports car around town and dumping her lover over nothing. The third has a working girl driving a smitten seminarian to distraction by swearing off sin at the worst possible moment. Mastroianni spends all three losing, happily, to the woman across from him.

The closing striptease, Loren peeling off layers to Armando Trovajoli's brassy score, became one of cinema's most quoted scenes, later winked at by Robert Zemeckis. It's light on its feet but never empty: under the jokes sits postwar Italy, broke, prudish and stubbornly alive. The film took the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film.
