Thunder Road

Thunder Road (2018) is Jim Cummings' tragicomedy, ready to watch online on iFILM. Police officer Jim Arnaud delivers a eulogy at his mother's funeral — one long unbroken take, both painfully funny and just plain painful, that sets the pitch for everything to come.

From there, Arnaud's life comes apart on every front. A divorce, a custody fight over his daughter, a job he keeps losing his grip on. Cummings directs, stars, and writes, balancing his character on a wire strung between farce and real grief, never tipping fully into either comedy or melodrama. You laugh, then catch yourself wondering whether you should have.

The feature grew out of Cummings' short film, which won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance, and that funeral scene carries over almost intact. The movie went on to take the Grand Jury award at the Locarno festival. It's a tiny-budget, deeply personal piece for anyone who likes their humor sitting right next to the hurt.
