Synopsis
The Young Girls of Rochefort (Les Demoiselles de Rochefort, 1967) is Jacques Demy's musical romance, and you can watch it online on iFILM. A seaside French town, a long weekend, a traveling fair rolls into the square, and the whole place seems to break into song and dance.
Twin sisters Delphine and Solange Garnier, played by Catherine Deneuve and her real-life sister Françoise Dorléac, teach music and dance while dreaming of Paris, true love and a bigger artistic life. Each is waiting for her perfect match, and he's right there: a sailor who paints, a visiting composer, a café owner carrying an old secret. Fate just keeps separating them by inches. The story circles the town square, a music shop and Madame Yvonne's café, weaving half a dozen crushes into one bright carousel of coincidence and missed timing.
Demy built a dazzling tribute to the Hollywood musical, casting Gene Kelly himself and George Chakiris of West Side Story, with a score by his regular collaborator Michel Legrand. It's a pastel, faintly wistful fairy tale for anyone who loves classic musicals and 1960s French cinema. One sad footnote: Dorléac died in a car crash not long after the film opened.
