Loretta Castorini is thirty-seven and convinced she's cursed in love, so she accepts mild-mannered Johnny's proposal as a practical arrangement rather than a passion. Then Johnny flies to Sicily to sit with his dying mother, and Loretta goes to make peace with his estranged brother Ronny, a one-handed baker who blames the family for everything. Cher plays Loretta and Nicolas Cage plays Ronny, both surrounded by a loud Italian-American clan where the father is straying, the grandfather walks his dogs at dawn, and the full moon seems to scramble everyone's good sense.
