Synopsis
The Best of Youth (La meglio gioventù, 2003) is an Italian family saga directed by Marco Tullio Giordana that you can watch online on iFILM. Across roughly six hours, it tracks two brothers through nearly four decades of their country's history.
It opens in the summer of 1966, when Roman students Nicola and Matteo Carati try to spirit a young psychiatric patient named Giorgia away from her institution. That single trip sends their lives in opposite directions. Nicola becomes a doctor who keeps faith in people; Matteo drops out, joins the police, and carries a quiet, corrosive anger. History crowds in around them: the Florence flood, student revolts, the terror of the Years of Lead, the fight to reform Italy's asylums. Private grief and small family joys keep echoing the fate of the nation, and the film never rushes a beat.
Conceived for television, it instead premiered at Cannes in 2003 and won the Un Certain Regard prize. This is slow, unshowy cinema for anyone willing to live an era alongside its characters rather than just watch a drama. Luigi Lo Cascio and Alessio Boni anchor it beautifully.
