Synopsis
Hamnet (2025) is a historical drama directed by Chloé Zhao — watch online on iFILM. Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal play Agnes and William in late sixteenth-century Stratford, with a score by Max Richter. The screenplay was co-written by Maggie O'Farrell, adapting her own novel.
William leaves for London to work with a theatre company. He stays a month, then longer, then longer still. Agnes keeps the house, raises three children, tends her herbs, and waits. Two of the children are twins — a boy named Hamnet and his sister Judith. When Hamnet falls ill, Agnes does everything she knows how to do. It is not enough. The grief that William will later channel into his most famous play is something Agnes carries entirely alone, in Stratford, while he puts it into words on a London stage.
Zhao shot the film without period-drama sheen: mud underfoot, tallow candles, rain on country roads. Jessie Buckley won both the Academy Award and the BAFTA for Best Actress in 2026 for her portrayal of Agnes; the film itself took the BAFTA for Outstanding British Film.
