Level 16

Level 16 (2018) is a sci-fi thriller from Canadian director Danishka Esterhazy that you can watch online on iFILM. Sixteen-year-old Vivien has spent her whole life inside Vestalis Academy, a windowless institution that trains girls to be obedient, modest and "clean."

The teachers promise that the most virtuous graduates of Level 16 will be adopted by wealthy families. Outside, they say, the air is poisoned. Katie Douglas plays Vivien, who reconnects with Sophia, a former friend she once betrayed. Sophia tells her to stop swallowing the vitamins handed out at lights-out. Off the pills, the girls finally stay awake long enough to see what really happens in the dormitory after dark, and why the school cares so much about keeping their skin flawless.

Esterhazy builds her dystopia with almost no effects at all, leaning on cold corridors, dim light and dread. It will land for anyone who liked Never Let Me Go or bleak YA science fiction with a sharp social edge. Sara Canning and Peter Outerbridge also appear. Stream Level 16 online on iFILM.
