About

Synopsis

Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975) is Peter Weir's mystery drama you can watch online on iFILM. The film that put Australian cinema on the international map, and it remains one of the most haunting puzzles ever committed to screen.

Valentine's Day, 1900. Pupils from a strict girls' boarding school are taken on an outing to an ancient volcanic outcrop. The afternoon is hot and drowsy. A handful of the girls and one of their teachers drift up toward the summit and simply never come back. Searches turn up nothing. As the investigation drags on, dread seeps through the school, unsettling everyone left behind, and no explanation ever arrives.

Weir shoots the whole thing through a soft, sun-bleached haze, with a pan flute floating over the images and the queasy logic of a daydream. The picture refuses to tell you what happened, and that withholding is exactly why it still grips audiences decades later. Starring Rachel Roberts, Anne-Louise Lambert and Helen Morse.
