Synopsis
One Night in Miami... (2020) is Regina King's drama, and you can watch online on iFILM. On a winter night in 1964, four Black icons lock themselves into a Miami motel room: a boxer, a minister, a singer, and a football star, each at the top of his game.
Cassius Clay (Eli Goree) has just shocked the world by beating Sonny Liston for the heavyweight title — he'll take the name Muhammad Ali soon after. Segregation laws keep the new champ out of the city's celebrations, so he, Malcolm X (Kingsley Ben-Adir), Sam Cooke (Leslie Odom Jr.) and Jim Brown (Aldis Hodge) hash it out behind a closed door: faith, money, fame, and what each man owes the fight for civil rights. What really passed between them is lost to history; Kemp Powers' script imagines the conversation that might have been.
Adapted from Powers' own stage play, the film mostly comes down to four men and the words flying between them — King's confident first feature behind the camera. Leslie Odom Jr. was up for an Oscar for the song "Speak Now." A talky, intimate piece for viewers who like their tension built out of argument rather than action. Stream One Night in Miami...
