Synopsis
Winter Sleep (Kış Uykusu, 2014) is Nuri Bilge Ceylan's Turkish drama, available to watch online on iFILM. Aydın, a retired actor, runs a small cliffside hotel in Anatolia and fills his days writing a local newspaper column, blind to how cold his own household has grown.
When snow cuts the hotel off from the valley, three people are left with nowhere to escape each other. His much younger wife Nihal (Melisa Sözen) pours herself into charity work just to feel independent. His divorced sister Necla needles him with irony across the dinner table. Down in the village, a poor tenant family seethes over rent Aydın won't forgive. The talk runs long and cuts deeper than any plot turn could.
The film took the Palme d'Or at Cannes and runs close to three and a half hours, so this is slow, Chekhovian cinema for viewers willing to sit inside a marriage and listen. Haluk Bilginer plays the vain intellectual so well you pity and resent him in the same breath. Stream Winter Sleep (2014) online on iFILM.
