Synopsis
Once Upon a Time in Anatolia (Bir Zamanlar Anadolu'da, 2011) is Nuri Bilge Ceylan's slow-burning crime drama, and you can watch it online on iFILM. A small convoy of men drives through the dark Anatolian steppe all night, searching for a buried body.
The suspect, Kenan, has already confessed, but he can't pin down the spot. In the headlights every hill, fountain, and lone tree looks the same. A prosecutor, a doctor, a police chief, drivers, and soldiers move from one bend to the next, digging, waiting, smoking, and slowly the talk drifts away from the case and toward their own lives — failed marriages, illness, the people they've lost. The investigation is really just a frame; the true story is what these men carry inside. Muhammet Uzuner, Yılmaz Erdoğan, and Taner Birsel lead the cast.
The film took the Grand Prix at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival and stands among the high points of Turkish cinema. Ceylan works almost without music, in long held shots where the night landscape and human silence say more than dialogue ever could. This isn't a film for viewers chasing momentum — it's two and a half hours of patient, grown-up observation that rewards anyone willing to sit with it.
