Phil Burbank (Benedict Cumberbatch) is sharp, cruel and allergic to anything he reads as weakness. When his quiet brother George (Jesse Plemons) marries the widow Rose (Kirsten Dunst) and brings her into the house with her teenage son, Phil sets out to break her. The mockery is slow and constant. Rose starts drinking. Meanwhile Peter (Kodi Smit-McPhee), thin and odd and easy to underestimate, watches the rancher closely — and turns out to be nobody's victim.
