Synopsis
The East (2013) is a slow-burn thriller you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Zal Batmanglij and written by its lead, Brit Marling.
Sarah works for a secretive private intelligence firm that protects big corporations. Her assignment: infiltrate an anarchist eco-collective called The East, a cell that hits companies poisoning people for profit — oil giants, pharma boards — with their own medicine. The deeper she sinks into the commune, the less sure she is whose side she's on. Group leader Benji, played by Alexander Skarsgård, turns out to be no raving zealot but a man whose logic is unnervingly clean.
The tension comes not from explosions but from Sarah's moral drift and from the "jams" — punishments aimed with painful precision back at the executives who earned them. Ellen Page and Patricia Clarkson round out the cast. Marling and Batmanglij wrote the script after actually living in collectives like this, and that lived texture shows. For anyone who likes smart films about activism with no easy villains, this one delivers. Stream The East (2013) online on iFILM.
