About

Synopsis

Rope (1948) is Alfred Hitchcock's crime thriller, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Two friends strangle a classmate in their own apartment, hide the body in a chest, then throw a dinner party right on top of it.

Brandon and Phillip (John Dall and Farley Granger) kill not for revenge but to prove they are superior beings who can get away with it. The guests include the victim's father and fiancee, and the buffet is laid out across the chest holding the corpse. Among them sits their old teacher, Rupert Cadell, played by James Stewart, whose half-joking talk about the right of "superior men" to murder the boys took far too literally. As the evening drags on, Phillip cracks while Rupert starts piecing the night together.

Hitchcock shot the film to look like a single unbroken take: the camera prowls the room, hiding its cuts, and the story unfolds in close to real time. It was his first color picture and a daring formal gamble. Stream Rope (1948) online on iFILM.
