Synopsis
A Dry White Season (1989) is a political drama directed by Euzhan Palcy — watch it online on iFILM. Based on André Brink's novel, the film is set in South Africa during the months that followed the Soweto student protests of June 1976, when the state's response to marching schoolchildren was clubs and live ammunition.
Donald Sutherland plays Ben Du Toit, a white Afrikaner schoolteacher comfortable in his routines. When the son of his Black gardener dies in police custody, Ben starts pulling at the thread — and what unravels goes far beyond one death. Jürgen Prochnow is quietly terrifying as the security branch detective who handles loose ends. Marlon Brando appears in a brief but scene-commanding role as a veteran barrister who has seen the inside of this system too many times.
Euzhan Palcy became the first Black woman to direct a major Hollywood studio feature (MGM), and she uses that platform with precision: no redemption arc, no comfortable resolution, just a portrait of complicity and what it costs to finally see clearly. Susan Sarandon also stars. Stream A Dry White Season (1989) in full online on iFILM.
