Synopsis
Watch The Brothers Karamazov (1958) online on iFILM — Richard Brooks directed and adapted Dostoevsky's novel, with Yul Brynner, Maria Schell, Claire Bloom, Lee J. Cobb and a young William Shatner. Russia, the 1870s. The Karamazov patriarch Fyodor is wealthy and miserly; his sons are in varying states of ruin and resentment.
Eldest son Dmitri, played by Brynner, is an officer permanently short of money and at war with his father. When he falls for Grushenka — the woman Fyodor keeps — the rivalry turns violent. Two other brothers read Dmitri's jealousy as an opening to hurry the inheritance along, while the youngest, a monk, watches the whole collapse with agonized stillness.
Brooks kept the moral architecture Dostoevsky built: guilt, conscience, honor, and the question of who is truly responsible for what happens that night. An American studio tackling the full weight of this novel was unusual for 1958 — and the film holds up. Stream The Brothers Karamazov online on iFILM.
