Killers of the Flower Moon

Killers of the Flower Moon (2023) — watch online on iFILM — is Martin Scorsese's three-and-a-half-hour crime epic about the systematic killing of Osage Nation members in 1920s Oklahoma after oil was discovered beneath their land. Leonardo DiCaprio plays Ernest Burkhart, a veteran who arrives in Osage County and falls under the influence of his uncle, William Hale — a man who calls himself a friend to the tribe.

Robert De Niro's Hale is all warmth and favors, steering Ernest toward marriage with Molly Kyle, an Osage woman from a prosperous family. Lily Gladstone plays Molly with quiet authority — a woman who trusts her husband while the people around her keep dying. The FBI eventually sends agents, but the real horror the film sits with is closer: Ernest knows, and keeps choosing not to stop it.

Based on David Grann's 2017 nonfiction book, the film earned seven Oscar nominations and a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Cast. Scorsese and co-writer Eric Roth rebuilt Grann's story around the perpetrators rather than the investigators, forcing the audience to watch the crime from inside.
