Synopsis
The Whales of August (1987) is a quiet American drama you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Lindsay Anderson and built around two women who carried a century of cinema between them. Bette Davis and Lillian Gish — both survivors of Hollywood's silent and golden eras — play elderly sisters spending a late summer afternoon on the Maine coast.
Sarah (Gish) has been blind for years; Libby (Davis) has never fully set down a lifetime of loss. Visitors arrive — Vincent Price in a surprisingly gentle role, Mary Steenburgen, and others — but the film stays rooted in the two sisters. Ann Sothern's performance in support earned her an Oscar nomination. There are no revelations, no plot pivots — just time, and memory, and what two people still have to say to each other.
