Synopsis
Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence (戦場のメリークリスマス, 1983) is Nagisa Oshima's wartime drama, ready to watch online on iFILM. A British-Japanese-New Zealand production, it stars David Bowie, Takeshi Kitano and Ryuichi Sakamoto.
Java, 1942. British Major Jack Celliers lands in a Japanese POW camp where beatings, hunger and fear can't seem to bend him. Captain Yonoi, who runs the place by a rigid samurai code, despises prisoners for choosing capture over death — yet in this defiant blond Englishman he glimpses something that unsettles him to the core. Colonel John Lawrence, fluent in Japanese and steeped in its culture, stands in the gap between two worlds. He understands both sides, which makes him useful and dangerous to each.
Oshima cared less about combat than about how honor, attraction and cruelty tangle together across the wire. Sakamoto composed the score himself, and its main theme is still recognized from the opening notes. The film competed for the Palme d'Or at Cannes. Slow, quietly devastating and built around contradictory men rather than action, it rewards viewers who want character over spectacle. Stream Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence (1983) online on iFILM.
