Synopsis
The Goldfinch (2019) is a literary drama you can watch online on iFILM, adapted from Donna Tartt's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by director John Crowley. It follows a boy whose whole life splits apart in a single blast.
Thirteen-year-old Theo Decker survives a terrorist bombing at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art that kills his mother. Dazed in the rubble, he walks out with a small Dutch painting — Carel Fabritius's 1654 The Goldfinch — and that stolen canvas becomes both his anchor and his curse for years. Ansel Elgort plays the grown Theo, Oakes Fegley the boy. Around him orbit a chilly Park Avenue guardian (Nicole Kidman), a gentle furniture restorer named Hobie (Jeffrey Wright), and Boris, the reckless Russian friend who pulls him toward drugs and worse.
The movie flopped at the box office and the critics weren't kind, but it has one ace: cinematographer Roger Deakins, and every frame proves it. This is a slow, 149-minute meditation on grief, art, and a childhood quietly robbed. Best suited to viewers who love faithful book adaptations and don't mind a melancholy pace.
