The Goldfinch

Ansel Elgort plays the grown Theo, Oakes Fegley the boy. Around him orbit a chilly Park Avenue guardian (Nicole Kidman), a gentle furniture restorer named Hobie (Jeffrey Wright), and Boris, the reckless Russian friend who pulls him toward drugs and worse.

The movie flopped at the box office and the critics weren't kind, but it has one ace: cinematographer Roger Deakins, and every frame proves it. This is a slow, 149-minute meditation on grief, art, and a childhood quietly robbed. Best suited to viewers who love faithful book adaptations and don't mind a melancholy pace.
