Cashback

Cashback (2007) is a British drama-comedy written and directed by Sean Ellis — expanded from his Oscar-nominated 2004 short of the same name — and you can watch it online on iFILM. After a bad breakup, art student Ben (Sean Biggerstaff) simply stops sleeping. Eight extra hours every night, and no idea what to do with them.

He takes a job on the night shift at a local supermarket. His co-workers have developed their own rituals for passing the dead hours. Ben discovers something stranger: he can freeze time — stop everyone mid-motion and walk through the stillness, looking at the world the way a painter looks at a model. Sharon, the cashier played by Emilia Fox, becomes the centre of that frozen world.

Ellis is less interested in plot mechanics than in the texture of boredom, loneliness and the strange beauty hidden in ordinary moments. It's a quiet film, occasionally funny, shot with real care.
