Synopsis
The Sucker (Le Corniaud, 1965) is Gérard Oury's crime comedy, free to watch online on iFILM. Cheerful holidaymaker Antoine Maréchal has no idea that the gleaming convertible handed to him for next to nothing is stuffed with gold, jewels and drugs.
Heading off to Italy, Maréchal (Bourvil) has his car flattened by speeding businessman Léopold Saroyan (Louis de Funès). To make amends, Saroyan asks the trusting sap to drive another vehicle from Naples to Bordeaux. The catch: contraband is hidden under the panels, and two rival smuggling gangs are closing in. Saroyan sweats every kilometer while Maréchal beams, oblivious, and that mismatch powers the whole road trip.
The pairing is the joy here. Bourvil plays serene, almost saintly stupidity against de Funès, who twitches and erupts at every setback. The film drew one of the biggest French box-office crowds of its decade and cemented de Funès as the country's reigning clown.
