Peter Sellers slips back into the trench coat and the mangled French accent for a third go. To crack the theft, Clouseau demolishes a museum, a Gstaad hotel and the last shred of sanity belonging to his boss Dreyfus, played by Herbert Lom as a man twitching toward a breakdown. Christopher Plummer is the retired gentleman thief known as the Phantom — too elegant to have done it, too convenient not to blame.

This was the entry that revived the whole series after a decade off and locked Clouseau in as one of cinema's great fools. The comedy is pure slapstick: pratfalls, disguises, wrecked rooms, and the deadpan calm of a man certain of his own brilliance. His valet Cato may ambush him at any moment.
