Synopsis
Joan Didion: The Center Will Not Hold (2017) is a documentary you can watch online at iFILM. Her nephew Griffin Dunne directed — 92 minutes of interview, archival footage and a candour that only someone inside the family could get on camera.
Didion wrote Slouching Towards Bethlehem, The White Album and The Year of Magical Thinking; she co-wrote several Hollywood screenplays alongside her husband John Gregory Dunne. The film moves through California in the 1960s, her New York years, and grief that arrived in consecutive waves. Harrison Ford, Anna Wintour, Vanessa Redgrave and Tom Brokaw all appear.
What lifts this beyond a career retrospective is the absence of flattery. Dunne doesn't argue for a legacy — he hands her the room, and her sentences do the rest. Stream Joan Didion: The Center Will Not Hold (2017) online at iFILM.
