Jawbreaker

Jawbreaker (1999) is a pitch-black teen comedy-thriller you can watch online on iFILM. Directed by Darren Stein, it follows the three meanest girls at Reagan High, led by Rose McGowan's ice-queen Courtney Shayne.

On their friend Liz's birthday morning, Courtney, Julie and Marcie pull a prank: they bind her, jam an oversized jawbreaker candy in her mouth and stuff her in a car trunk. It was supposed to end in cake and giggles. Instead Liz chokes to death. Courtney coolly sets about covering it up — until shy classmate Fern witnesses everything. Her price for silence is a makeover: from invisible nobody to the clique's new it-girl.

The movie runs on candy-colored late-nineties style: neon prom dresses, a pop-punk soundtrack from The Donnas, plus cameos by Marilyn Manson and Pam Grier as the detective on the case. This is no straight whodunit but a vicious satire of high-school hierarchy, the bratty heir to Heathers with a razor behind its glossy smile.
