Synopsis
Love Is the Devil: Study for a Portrait of Francis Bacon (1998) is a biographical drama you can watch online on iFILM. London, 1963. Painter Francis Bacon (Derek Jacobi) finds a burglar in his studio and, instead of calling the police, takes him in. The burglar is George Dyer (Daniel Craig) — a working-class man from the East End who suddenly finds himself inside Bacon's world of clubs, collectors, and excess.
Director John Maybury builds the film around the imbalance at the core of the relationship. Bacon is already celebrated, already surrounded, already capable of casual cruelty. Dyer holds on while sliding toward addiction. Tilda Swinton plays Muriel Belcher, the sharp-tongued fixture of Soho's Colony Room Club and one of Bacon's closest companions. The film's visual language — warped framing, extreme close-ups, color pushed to bruising — mirrors Bacon's own treatment of the human figure on canvas.
Daniel Craig is here years before Bond, playing something far more fragile. Stream Love Is the Devil (1998) online on iFILM.
